I spoke with the head of our department (O), and she said that it turns out there was a miscommunication between her and the graduate coordinator. The grad coordinator (A) is on his way out toward retirement, so the dept head did most of the advising this time around. Normally, A would look over all of our class schedules and make sure that every spring applicant would be ready to start clinic (actually working as a graduate student clinician) before telling us to apply. O didnapos;t do that, so a whole bunch of us applied before we were ready to start clinic. I knew that I wouldnapos;t be ready to start clinic, but I thought that they could defer my clinic duty until the fall while giving me classified grad student status in the meantime. Turns out, they can only defer you like that if you apply in the fall and they defer you till spring, not the other way around. O apologized for the mix-up and said she takes responsibility for the confusion, and feels bad about it. I like her a lot and it felt sincere, so Iapos;m a lot less upset about it now.
She also said that our group of applicants were a very strong group, and we have very good chances of getting in next fall. She said that I really donapos;t need to worry about it, and to tell B we shouldnapos;t have to move away for me to go somewhere else. I told her I kinda figured that if she specifically chose me to work on her pet research project for my thesis, there was a good chance she expected me to actually be here to do it, and she laughed. Maybe things arenapos;t so bad after all. I just wish I had a letter in my hand saying I was in
